Parent to Parent of Virginia

Partners

Parent to Parent of Virginia has a 25+ year history of collaborating with a variety of parent organizations and local and state public agencies. Some of these collaborations included funding for Parent to Parent of Virginia to develop trainings, products and/or to gather feedback from stakeholders about disability services in the Commonwealth.

In 2013, Parent to Parent of Virginia was a contractor for Human Services Research Institute’s study of Virginia’s Medicaid Waivers. Through facilitation of 16 stakeholder forums in 8 communities, over 1,000 people provided input on how Virginia could make its long term care supports more accessible, more user-friendly, and more equitable. Two long term Parent to Parent of Virginia collaborations are highlighted below:

Title V Collaboration
Since 2003, Parent to Parent of Virginia has received funding to collaborate with Virginia’s Title V special health care needs Care Connection for Children network funded by the Virginia Department of Health.

Care Connection for Children programs assist families of children with special health care needs in accessing specialty medical care; assisting with coordinating care and services; assisting with obtaining health insurance for the child; and by providing information and referral to community resources.

Parent to Parent of Virginia supports the Central Virginia Care Connection for Children office by providing one-to-one emotional and informational support to parents of children with special health care needs; IEP advocacy; and training focused on enhancing parents’ skills in becoming more active in the financing and coordination of their child’s health care.

Family to Family Health Information & Education Center
Virginia has operated a Family to Family (F2F) Health Information & Education Center since 2005; first as a collaboration between PTPofVA, Family Voices of Virginia, the Federation of Children, and Medical Home Plus (MHP), and later as a program of the Center for Family Involvement at the Partnership for People with Disabilities with consultation from PTPofVA and MHP.

The F2F is currently Virginia’s largest Parent to Parent program, operating 7 local offices providing intensive emotional, informational and systems navigational support and training to over 10,000 families since 2005.
